The Alliance for Encryption in Latin America and the Caribbean is born

  • The AC-LAC announces its launch and proposes to join efforts in the region to defend Encryption and make capacities and knowledge building around the subject.
  • IDDLAC will act as the secretariat of this Alliance that is beginning to take its first steps.

Wednesday  13th October, 2021.The Alliance for Encryption in Latin America and the Caribbean – AC-LAC, is established as a platform for the collective construction of capacities and knowledge in Latin America and the Caribbean, based on encryption as an essential tool for the security and respect of the human and fundamental rights in the region, such as freedom of expression and privacy.

 

This regional Alliance seeks to advance a proactive agenda to promote and defend encryption in Latin America and the Caribbean that strengthens it and generates an ecosystem of trust, security, and stability of information and communication technologies, such as critical Internet infrastructure, applications and services.

 

The platform, made up of 14 organizations distributed throughout the region, seeks to coordinate efforts with the different initiatives at the global, regional and national levels, generating spaces for exchange and mobilization in the face of the impact of the weakening of encryption on rights and security.

 

The member organizations, which have managed to draw up a joint agenda, despite their diverse natures and interests, are:  Access Now, ALAI, APC; Artículo 19; Coalizão Direitos na Rede (CDR); Derechos Digitales; EFF; Fundación Karisma; IP.rec; IRIS; ISOC Brasil; Nic.br; and R3D. he eLAC initiative will participate as an observer member. The space is open to receive more members who share the principles and ideas of the alliance.

 

In addition to the 14 member organizations, AC-LAC has the Institute  for Digital Development of Latin America and Caribbean – IDD LAC – that is in charge of the secretariat work.
